Serotonin – The “Happiness Hormone”
Serotonin, the happiness hormone, and melatonin, the sleep hormone, hold significant roles in the human body. The symbolic meaning of serotonin lies in the awareness of one’s spirit.
When the body lacks serotonin, a person feels depressed, experiences an increase in pessimistic and apathetic moods, worsened mood, fatigue, weakness, and loss of energy. When serotonin levels are normal, we experience a great sense of well-being, a feeling of living a fulfilling life, and a sense of prosperity. Thanks to serotonin, we work most productively because we can fully focus on the task at hand. Fluctuations in serotonin levels can lead to anxiety, irritability, anger outbursts, memory impairment, chronic insomnia, and loss of interest. If serotonin levels remain low for an extended period, a person may develop apathy, chronic muscle pain, migraines, and digestive system issues.
Serotonin is also involved in many other processes:
- Regulation of blood vessel tone and wound healing
- Helps constrict arteries
- Increases blood clotting
- Causes nausea in cases of poisoning and helps the body expel harmful substances through diarrhea
- Promotes bone health (serotonin deficiency can lead to osteoporosis)
- Participates in allergic reactions and inflammation
- Affects the endocrine system and the pituitary gland
- Involved in the process of sexual arousal and even childbirth
Serotonin is produced in nerve cells from the amino acid L-tryptophan during daylight, which explains the so-called seasonal depression in autumn and winter—lack of sunlight for serotonin synthesis leads to the development of depression. 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a substance formed in the human body from the essential amino acid tryptophan, which we obtain from food. In the brain, 5-HTP is converted into serotonin. 5-HTP is naturally found in the wild plant Griffonia, which grows in Central Africa. It is recommended to choose foods that contain the amino acid tryptophan, such as chicken eggs, seafood, turkey meat, brown rice, bananas, beans, and nuts.
Melatonin – The “Sleep Hormone”
Melatonin is produced from serotonin when darkness falls. It ensures sleep for a person. Without melatonin, one cannot fall asleep and get restful sleep. If a person lacks serotonin, which can be deficient in stressful conditions and depressive states, the nervous system becomes weaker, and sleep disturbances and insomnia begin to develop.
Melatonin is a growth hormone, which is why nails, hair, and other body parts grow during sleep. If a person has sufficient melatonin levels, their hair does not turn gray. Hair starts to gray when the body’s melatonin levels decrease. Melatonin levels drop when a person is not internally happy with their life. Thoughts like “I can’t, I don’t know how,” which indicate mental weakness, arise. Gray hair develops in a person who cannot solve a problem that causes inner turmoil, leading to a feeling of helplessness—what they desired most did not work out.
A person with normal melatonin levels lives easily and joyfully. A person with insufficient melatonin levels internally feels like an old person, with a sense of helplessness.
