Cosmetic Classification

Cosmetic Classification

Cosmetics are categorized by an international classification system that divides them into standard cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. While standard cosmetics are applied externally to the face and body, cosmeceuticals have pharmacological properties and work at a deeper level.

Key Differences Between Standard Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals:

  • Standard Cosmetics: These products are designed to mask skin imperfections and improve the skin’s appearance temporarily. For instance, they might reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but achieving lasting results typically requires specific treatments and ingredients.
  • Cosmeceuticals: These products penetrate deeper into the skin, affecting the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. They do not depend on skin type, climate, or age and do not cause habituation. Unlike standard cosmetics, which mainly target the outer skin layer, cosmeceuticals address deeper skin layers for more profound effects.

Types of Cosmetics:

  • Mass Market: Often claims to contain natural ingredients, but these may be processed with formaldehyde and other chemicals. As a result, it can be difficult to consider these products as high-quality or truly beneficial.
  • Middle Market: Contains 30-40% bioactive substances and avoids toxic preservatives, reducing the likelihood of habituation.
  • Luxury: Features 70-80% bioactive substances, including brands like Lusei Loren, Givenchy, Clinique, and Elizabeth Arden. A significant portion of the cost is attributed to brand prestige.
  • Cosmeceuticals: Typically available in pharmacies and use advanced nano-cluster systems. These are divided into three levels, with third-level cosmeceuticals representing the highest quality. Coral Club is an example of a top-tier cosmeceutical brand.

The Importance of Choosing High-Quality Cosmetics

The skin is our largest organ, and what we apply to it directly impacts our overall health. Using cosmetics that contain toxic substances, such as petroleum-based ingredients, can harm the skin and accelerate aging. Sometimes, avoiding harmful products altogether is better than using extremely detrimental ones. Given that the skin is exposed to environmental factors like sun, dust, wind, and pollutants, it needs proper care and protection. To maintain skin health, nourishment, moisture, and protection are essential. Therefore, selecting high-quality products that do not damage skin cells is crucial.
